01Technical introduction
Chlorinated Paraffin (CP): overview
Chlorinated paraffin is a clear, light pale yellow, transparent viscous liquid used as a secondary plasticizer in PVC and as a functional additive in flame-retardant, metalworking, sealant and coating systems. Superior Plasto Chem supplies all grades of CP, with a published specification for two series: A (A1, A2, A3) and B (B1, B2, B3).
The three grades in each series correspond to nominal chlorine contents of 62 %, 52 % and 42 % (w/w). Within each chlorine level, the B series offers higher viscosity and lower volatile loss than the A series. The full tables below include specific gravity, colour, free acidity, free chlorine, thermal stability index, pH, viscosity and volatile loss.
Benefits
- Six published grades across two series, so viscosity and volatility can be matched to the process.
- Three chlorine levels (about 42 %, 52 % and 62 %) to balance plasticizing, flame performance and compatibility.
- Free chlorine specified as nil; free mineral acidity 0.001 % max (as HCl).
- Thermal stability index of 0.10 % max (as HCl after 4 h at 175 °C).
- Specific grades can be tailored to customer requirements, subject to confirmation.

Documentation
Technical data sheet (TDS), certificate of analysis (COA) and safety data sheet (SDS) availability depends on the grade and source. Ask for the documents you need when you request a quote and we will confirm what can be supplied for your order.
05Storage and handling
Storage and handling
- Store in tightly closed, clean and dry containers, away from direct heat, sunlight and ignition sources.
- Keep away from strong oxidisers, strong acids and bases; keep containers off bare ground and clear of drains.
- Use dedicated, clean transfer equipment to avoid cross-contamination and moisture pick-up.
- Follow the safety data sheet (SDS) for personal protective equipment, spill response and disposal.
- Viscous grades flow more easily when gently warmed; avoid overheating and follow the SDS.
General good-practice guidance. The safety data sheet for your supplied grade always takes precedence.

08FAQ
Chlorinated Paraffin: frequently asked
What do the grade codes A1 to B3 mean?
The letter is the series (A or B). The digit is the chlorine level: 1 is about 62 %, 2 is about 52 %, 3 is about 42 % w/w. B series grades are more viscous and less volatile than the equivalent A series grade.
Which CP grade is most commonly asked for?
Requirements vary by industry and formulation. Send us the chlorine level, viscosity and volatile-loss window you need and we will recommend from the table.
Do you export chlorinated paraffin?
Our company information states that we export all grades of chlorinated paraffin. Send your destination country and we will confirm feasibility and documentation.
Are there regulatory limits on chlorinated paraffin?
Some chain-length categories of chlorinated paraffin are regulated in several jurisdictions. We make no compliance claim on this page; please check the regulations of your destination market and discuss your requirement with us.
