01Technical introduction
DOP (Di-Octyl Phthalate): overview
DOP (di-octyl phthalate) is the long-established general-purpose primary plasticizer for flexible PVC. Superior Plasto Chem supplies DOP with a published specification: colour 20 Hazen units maximum, specific gravity 0.980 to 0.986 at 27 °C, acid value 0.01 % maximum and G.C. ester purity of 99 % minimum.
Buyers use the table below to align incoming-inspection limits with the supply. Where tighter purity or an odourless profile is needed, see odourless DOP (O.D.O.P).
Benefits
- Established, well-understood plasticizer for flexible PVC across most processing routes.
- Published characteristics with the test method for each value.
- Low moisture (0.1 % max) and acid value (0.01 % max) for stable compound processing.
- Colour held to 20 Hazen units max before and after heat treatment at 180 °C.
- Available alongside DBP and chlorinated paraffin for blended plasticizer systems.

Documentation
Technical data sheet (TDS), certificate of analysis (COA) and safety data sheet (SDS) availability depends on the grade and source. Ask for the documents you need when you request a quote and we will confirm what can be supplied for your order.
05Storage and handling
Storage and handling
- Store in tightly closed, clean and dry containers, away from direct heat, sunlight and ignition sources.
- Keep away from strong oxidisers, strong acids and bases; keep containers off bare ground and clear of drains.
- Use dedicated, clean transfer equipment to avoid cross-contamination and moisture pick-up.
- Follow the safety data sheet (SDS) for personal protective equipment, spill response and disposal.
General good-practice guidance. The safety data sheet for your supplied grade always takes precedence.
06Applications
Where DOP is used
| Application | Note |
|---|---|
| Flexible PVC compounds | Primary plasticizer for general-purpose formulations |
| Wires and cables | Insulation and sheathing compounds |
| Calendered sheets, films and leather cloth | Flexible PVC sheeting |
| Hoses and tubing | Flexible PVC extrusion |
Application suggestions are general technical uses of DOP in flexible PVC. Validate in your own formulation.

08FAQ
DOP: frequently asked
Is DOP the same as DEHP?
In common industry usage, DOP refers to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, also called DEHP. Confirm the exact chemical identity and CAS number you require on your purchase specification.
When should I choose DOP over DBP?
DOP is the general-purpose choice for flexible PVC. DBP is a lighter, more polar phthalate often used in blends or where faster fusion is wanted. Compare the two specification tables and discuss your formulation with us.
Do you supply DOP in bulk?
We serve bulk and urgent orders from our logistics facility at Bhiwandi. Send the quantity you need and we will confirm pack options and lead time.
Are phthalate plasticizers restricted?
Some markets and product categories restrict specific phthalates. We do not make compliance claims on this page; please check the rules that apply to your end product and destination.
